Alligator Facts

July 15, 2022 by Andre Coetzee Leave a Comment

Alligators are often confused with crocodiles as they share many similar characteristics.
However, they are unique in their own way. If you happen to come across an alligator, we
strongly advise contacting alligator removal near me, as this is not something you should take
on yourself. Alligator’s will attack you and your family if approached so you must take as many
precautions as possible. See below for some interesting facts that you may or may not be aware
of in regards to alligators.
 They’re Very Old: Alligators can be considered ancient in fact! Alligators have
undergone little evolutionary change since the time of the dinosaurs. In America
alligators originated roughly 84 million years ago, while their ancestors can be traced
back over 200 million years ago.
 Can’t Survive in Salt Water: Unlike crocodiles, alligators lack the proper glands to
secrete salt from their body, so they are unable to survive in salt water. Despite this,
alligators can be found hunting near water, just not taking a swim.
 Weight: Alligators are known to be over 1,000 pounds in weight! One of the largest
alligators ever to be found was noted in Alabama weighing in at nearly 1,100 pounds.
 Gender Selection: One of the most interesting facts about alligators is that their gender
is not determined by DNA. In fact, it is temperature that determines whether or not an
alligator is a boy or a girl. If it is warm an alligator will be born a boy and if it is cooler an
alligator will be born a girl.
 Sprinters: Alligators are known for running extremely fast, in fact up to 35 MPH!
However, this is not a speed that they can sustain for long. Alligators were built for small
sprints rather than a marathon. Remember should you encounter an alligator; we
strongly recommend looking up alligator removal near me.
